Default some answers...

i did wax my car before using it, but i'm a freak about waxing my car. i dont think its necessary. its fine in hot weather. just make sure you dont put tape over tape too much. that's where it will peal. i got mine at home depot for like 5 bucks a roll. i used one roll to tape the car..almost all of it, and brought a roll to "touch up" where it needed it when we stopped for gas. i HIGHLY recommend it. just take the time and do it right when you do it.

cheers

Default its blue painters masking tape

you can tape up the front end of your car. it keeps bugs and rock chips off of your car. makes life a LOT easier when you go to clean it after the trip. i used it to and from CO to pittsburgh

Default Frankly, I don't understand it...

It's fine for a road trip, if you want to make life easy when it comes time to clean the bug guts. The 3M low adhesive variety available in Home Depot works well and doesn't really leave any adhesive behind for you to clean up.

Personally, I use it when detailing the car, to mask off areas I don't want to polish. When water gets underneath the tape, it won't stick, and it will start to peel off, so if you're planning on driving though a rainstorm, expect it to look like a mess when you pull over for gas.

As far as what it will do for you...it won't really protect your paint from anything larger than a grain of sand. Unfortunately, for a road trip, you'll need more than this. You'll need something thick enough to protect the paint from chips as a result of pebbles and small stones. Racer's tape (like duct tape with less permanent adhesive) will serve this purpose well, however it leaves an adhesive residue behind that requires a solvent to remove, followed by a re-wax.

Default since your local...i found out the cheapest place to get that stuff is OSH or Ace...

OSH had some crazy 3" rolls. i was buying tape for it's intended purpose...not as a mask though.
