Default Question about rebuild after breaking a timing belt...

Got my brothers car apart, the teeth actually came off the belt in about 1/4 of the belt, it didn't break in half. Anyway, how do I set the timing now since I'm sure it's wherever it wants to be.

According to the bently, I set the camshaft first, then the crank to TDC cyl 1, but do I just line up the mark on the camshaft pulley to set it? Does it matter what rotation it is on? Just wanted to check.

Default If the timing belt lost teeth, you're going to need new valves

or a new cylinder head. No point in even working on it until you have all the parts.

So what caused the belt to lose teeth? Do you know yet?

Default mileage I"m guessing, nothing seems siezed, everything that should, rotates freely

I was just curious on the timing. Prob. going to have to pull the head and let him get that fixed after I leave.

Default Well, if you really want to check it

There is a timing mark on the cam pulley and on the crank pulley that correspond to marks on the covers behind them. Line the marks up with the arrows.

Default A comment.....

You'll want to make sure there was no damage to the pistons and rods. Get out Starrett tools and start measuring up.

Yep, same here. Usually its the tensioner or the water pump.

Default I checked everything, didn't think about the tensioner though

Guess it could have been that. Crank/cam/intermediate all rotate fine thankfully, so hopefully it was one of the others that were replaced.
