Default Question on CV boot replacement

I took off my drivers side wheel today because i noticed a good amount grease on the inside of my rim and notice the boot was torn which was the cause, I'm just wondering how long does it take to do a replacement for that side. Thanks! let me know

Because if the boots torn, your cv is 99% likely to be trashed, and if you have over 100k, its false economy anyway. You can get brand new complete axles for <$100. Question, is why WOULDN'T you replace the axle? - Do it right, or likely do it thrice!

99%? Really?

I can't remember the last time I replaced a CV joint, but I've done plenty of boots. Our two daily driver Audi's have a total of about 470K on them and both are running on the original joints. If you inspect the boots regularly and change them when they are cracked or shortly after they fail, there is a good chance (better than your 1%) that you will never need to replace a joint.

A boot is usually less than $15. I'm not seeing your "false ecomony" and I'm certainly not understanding how replacing parts that are not worn out has anything to do with "doing it right"

I totally disagree with that sweeping statement. If CV joints were "99% likely to be trashed" because a split is throwing some grease out, nobody would be selling CV boot kits! I've had my share of boots develop splits and fling out some grease, and never had a "trashed" joint result. The only time that I bought a rebuilt shaft was for a Jetta 1.8T that broke its inner joint. Shops naturally prefer to put in a complete drive shaft, but for doing the job at home, just spend $15 for the boot kit.

Have to agree with the previous posters, replacing the entire axle is possibly overkill.

If it ain't clicking just change the boot. You can change the outer without removing the entire axle, it's messy but takes about an hour.

Hello. I have grease on my rims and all over the cv boot also. My 1990 audi 80 is also making a horrid scraping/grinding noise when i gently press the gas and go around 2-3-4 miles/hr or when i get to higher speeds like 40-50 mph. im hoping this is the problem. any thoughts would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!!
