Hello. I have grease on my rims and all over the cv boot also. My 1990 audi 80 is also making a horrid scraping/grinding noise when i gently press the gas and go around 2-3-4 miles/hr or when i get to higher speeds like 40-50 mph. im hoping this is the problem. any thoughts would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!!

Thanks. Im thinking of replacing the cv joint. got this from Raxles trouble shooting info.
Continuous humming or growling noise. Inadequate lubrication on inner or outer joints (check boots for leaks). May also be worn gears or wheel bearings. Inspect CV joint - replace if necessary.

The boot on my passenger side axel is severed open. There is no telling how long it's been that way, but there's no sign of any sort of fluid spray or leak.
After reading this thread, I understand that I need to replace the boot, but the thing that concerns me is a knocking that I get whenever I hit a bump on that side. I can feel it in the steering wheel and hear it through the floor board. I'm positive it's coming from that wheel area, I just don't know if it's related the torn boot or if it's more of a suspension thing.
Would a damaged cv joint or axel make a knocking noise like that? How could I troubleshoot the problem?
Thanks for your help.
