Did your cars have the problem since you own them,
or did the problem happen after many K miles?
I have not noticed any wet braking problem on my '96 (only minor brake fade in rain), but I am worried that it might happen at the worst time.

My '98 had the problem from day one, although it has mysteriously gotten better in the last year or two. I recently read about a new Mercedes electronic braking technology, already deployed on one model, that allows total electronic control over each wheel individually. This capability offers many advantages, one of which is that the Mercedes senses wet conditions (crudely, I believe, by monitoriing windshield wiper activity) and automatically applies just enough braking periodically to keep rotors dry. I love the concept, though it won't help us.

I read that the electronic braking system decides what to do based on info from many sensors, including the car's electronic stability control system. So it won't do anything that would destabilize the car. Another neat trick is that the system anticipates an impending panic stop based on driver behavior and gets the entire system ready to apply brake force instantly. This procedure supposedly reduces panic stop times from highway speed by 3%.
