Hi folks.
For those of you with the 3M protective coating on your cars, have any of you experienced the formation of what appears to be rust spots under the film? I have had mine replaced twice already, and I have an appointment to have it replaced again next week.
BTW: I own a 2001, silver A4. And I am the only owner, so I don't think there was any body damage to the bumper, unless it happened during shipping.
If any of you have experienced this, please let me know, and if you found a solution, that would be even better!
Thanks and have a safe weekend.
Rich

My guess is that the shop isn't cleaning your car well enough before the install, and perhaps something is reacting with the glue?

I watched them apply it (and helped on larger pieces). Leftlover pieces I used to ocer the rear bumper just belwo the hatch on my Avant. As I remember, the cleaning was just using a household laundry soap (I used a car wash liquid soap for rear bumper). 3M film was applied using a water/alcohol spray on the paint.

Thanks. I know the bumpers are not metal, so there should be no rust. But the spots do look like rust...small orange blotches. I guess I'll find out more this coming Saturday (I hope).

The "pseudo-rust" spots are bug acid! I was not applying enough wax after I washed the car, so the bugs leave orange spots on the 3M coating. Too bad I didn't know this before. ![Frown](https://www.audiworld.com/forums/images/smilies/frown.gif)

Did the bugs leave spots on the 3M coating, or are they under it? Any idea what kind of bugs? I've been thinking of getting the StoneGard or XPel covers, but if that means having to wash the car after every summer night drive, I'm gonna have to think twice about it.

Mirror(x2),
the spots are on the 3M coating. If you add some wax after you wash your car, there should be no problems with staining. I know my bumper and hood are in much better shape WITH the 3M coating than without.
Anyway, I wish I had of been more proactive with my waxing habits.
