Default questions on possible MAF sensor problem...

My car has been idling funny and having momentary periods of reduced power while dirving around town. After searching around the archives for a while it seems the MAF sensor could be ther problem. If i were to unplug the MAF connection, It should run consistently but either very lean or rich, not sure which... Will this work as a diagnostic step? Any other ideas to try?

Default Yes it can work, most of the time the car will run rich

during wot since it used the maf to help lean out the car. At part throttle and idle it wont matter much because the ecu still uses the 02 sensor to keep the car in check.

Default try cleaning it?

remove the maf from the airbox, put it in a ziplock bag and fill the bag with isopropypl alcohol, swish it around for a while and dry off good.

Default Removal/replacement guide

Sounds easy enough, are there any guides around, i haven't found them yet in the archives, but I think there is one somewhere.

There are 3 connections under the cover, which one is it?

Default Under which cover?

The maf plug is the one with the rubber boot on it on top of the air box. Just move the boot and unplug the maf harness.

Default Re: Removal/replacement guide

Removing the MAF from the air box is simple. Just take the air box off the car and look inside of it. You will see the MAF is held on to the box by a couple of screws. Just unscrew it and take it off. Make sure you put it back on the same way because the air has to flow in the right direction.

Default Re: Under which cover?

On the top of the air box there are 3 plugs, one small one and two roughly the same size...

Default It would be the one that goes into the top of the air box

with a rubber boot and a set of wires coming straight up. Sorry its been almost 4 years since I have had a stock air box in my car.
