10W-30 is a little thinner.
Mobil 1 doesn't come in 15W-40. Only 10W-30 or 15W-50. Not sure where you are, but I think 15W-50 is a little too thick for winter months (unless you do a lot of racing & hard driving). When I switched to 10W-30 for winter months, I noticed a 20-25 degree drop in oil temp at operating temp. Makes me think twice about going back to 15W-50.

Not really, long oil chat (from me?)...
There are several diesel grades of Mobil that include the 40wt synthetic. There are also a couple of European importers.
AUDI ADVISES 5W30!!! The only point of using 20W50 is to make the engine work harder-hence the higher temps. The 50 part of the viscosity works against you when the engine is warm, 30 is ample, particularly in a low-clearance (tight) engine such as ours.
I have never heard of a SINGLE oil-related engine problem in 5 years of SCCA competition (exc. for P-car bearings:bad design), and two years on this list. Look at the tech. specs. at the mobil or redline sites. You gain gas mileage, torque, and reduce startup wear with 5w30.
The oilcooler is a heat exchanger with the engine coolant. It will not drop because of temp unless the coolant changes temp. (I haven't seen coolant temp change from 90 to -30f.)

No, change was immediate
It actually got warmer out a few days afterwards, and same readings. I have heard of others running 5W-30 or even 0W and their readings seem to be the same or lower. I guess it has to do with the extra pressure/friction of thicker oils.
