Default Quick timing belt questions...

I'm about to change my timing belt on my 1998 1.8T, but I have 2 questions...

- How can I tell whether I have the old or new tensioner (updated 98-ish) BEFORE I take it all apart?

- The local dealer tells me that there's an even newer (improved) tensioner kit that Audi just put out for that model/year A4. Anyone know anything about this?

Cheers,
-Neil.

Default My 98.5 had the old tensioner.

You're likely to have the older one.

Default You can't really tell..

..it's buried underneath a plastic cover, which I'm not sure that you can get off easily. I'd say 90% chance you've still got the old style. Here's a comparo of the old vs. new if you happen to get a peek:

So what's this about an even NEWER style tensioner?? I really doubt that Audi has come out with a 3rd tensioner for the 1.8T....the second one has been good enough, AFAIK. Find out some more info though....I'm curious.

Default BOTH the tensioner and dampner were updated.

the tensioner now comes with an updated bracket, and I'm pretty sure the dampner is now longer.

Oh, and the belt is changed too because of all this...

I assume the one on the right in that pic is the newer one?
