Raced a Passat W8 the other day with my 1.8T.

That Passat has some serious pulling power. Towards the end I noticed some serious brake fade. Will going to 312 mm slotted rotors and Mintex pads make a significant difference with this issue?

as we were heading up to the ferry to go over to Vancouver from the island. They kept pulling away but I didn't embarrass myself as my car is modded with chip, etc.
Re: brakes, the highway is such that you have to brake to accommodate curves and other vehicles. My brake fade concerned me...for obvious reasons.

It is a heavy sucker. Then again, what Audi or B5 isn't? As for power...there is plenty. Correct on the 275HP...but it isn't 170 Ft.Lbs, it is 270Ft.Lbs. The tiptronic is like any other in the Audi/VW family...there is a lag and the shifts are a bit slow. However, the tranny is adaptive, and the more leadfooted you are the more the tranny adapts and reacts.
By the way, the 0-60 times posted in most magazines has been under 7 seconds, with the fastest I have seen listed at 6.5. The rolling start is fantastic due to the great gobs of torque and the AWD. And the top end is pretty amazing, with the car pulling a relaxed 2500RPM at 100MPH...and plenty of pull ready in 4th. My tranny pretty well jumps off the line, because I am very leadfooted...and I have no problem chirping all 4 tires on takeoff, despite the AWD system and ESP, with no brake loading.
Softer handling is remedied with sport springs and 17" wheels, while the steering is one of the best I have ever driven (better than any other VW product, and superior to any A4, A6, or TT I have ever driven). The brakes are excellent, as expected, since they are the same rotors and 4-piston calipers from the S4.
The W8 will not challenge anything from BMW with an M badge on it, and an Audi S won't have much problem either...but trust me, it will definately take a 1.8T or 2.8 V6 at any speed from standstill to 130MPH, standing or rolling. With work done, the excellent 1.8T engine will hold its own and make a respectable showing...but out of the box the W8 has some excellent pulling power. Kick it around town with some tip shifting and redlines, and the tranny will adapt to a much quicker response off the line...and manually tipping into appropriate gear when approaching a stop will have you prepared for immediate launch if the light changes. Tiptronic just requires an adapted driving style, but can still be made useful and respectably fast...though no substitute for a proerly skilled driver with a manual.
My W8 has been excellent, is very fast and comfortable at ridiculous post-legal speeds, has awesome traction in snow and rain, excellent brakes and steering, very strong acceleration, a beautiful 275HP engine with a brilliant exhaust note, and gives me lots of room, every imaginable luxury feature, and cost me just a hair over 34K.
Pretty hard to beat that combination of utility, content, features, traction, power, and price, which is why I bought one!
