Are ramps or jack stands safe? I don't have a garage or perfectly level place to use them.

a friend of mine in alaska was crushed to death, he was an experienced and gifted mechanic. if you use them perfectly they are safe to a point, but i will never again crawl underneath a vehicle on them. ramps have such a bigger footprint, i feel safe underneath with them. if you are jiggling the car at all on jackstands i don't trust them. i do use them for working on tires/wheels/brakes, anything i can do from beside the car. if the work is extensive underneath, consider paying someone to do it on a real lift, or renting that space. ALSO-IMPORTANT - anyone leaving a car unattended (besides in a locked garage) on jackstands should be jailed, children should not be exposed to that degree of danger. whenever i see a car on jackstands with nobody around, i feel like going and pushing it over (not hard to do) to eliminate the potential for catastrophe i see there. i'm done preaching now.

i did some pretty major work at the coin-op car wash. i never had a garage, and in winter the carwashes keep big big space heaters going in each stall, and the stalls have garage doors on both ends. i'd go in at 1 or 2 am and could work undisturbed for hours, as long as i wanted. warm, with light, and a pressure washer handy.
