Default umm... the reason hp is cheap for a 1.8t is because it's a *turbo*

you can turn up boost quite a bit on the stock engine, and get power from that.

Default That's not at all what I asked. I drew an analogy of "cheap power"

<center><img src="http://pictureposter.audiworld.com/60502/car_pics_11-24-03_007.jpg"></center><p>Popping 100 HP in the 1.8 is not difficult, time consuming, or particularly expensive.

The parallel is of cost effective, drivable power addition.

The picture is an example of a extremely cost-intensive engine package to upgrade.

Default I'm guessing not...

Considering it's hard to get that kind of hp jump on any N.A. motor. When you do, it's usually due to adjustmemts of internal (moving) parts of which the rotary has few. Another problem is all of the intake contraptions that the new "Renesis" rotary uses to get that kind of power. There's several different intake paths/systems that are activated at different times in the powerband. It's weird and complicated, so I'm guessing it will be a while before anyone develops a forced induction kit, or any severe tuning advancements for that motor.

Default Oh, and in comparison to the old rotaries....

They were about the same displacent, if not exactly the same (1.3L iirc) and can be tuned to krazy hp numbers. But that motor was developed as a forced induction motor, so most of those gains were in the turbo system, like a 1.8t.

Default rotary displacement does not correlate well to typical displacement

apples to oranges, which is why when you talk HP/liter, the rotaries are completely left out.

Default There will be turbo kits for the engine soon enough, so i would say yes...

even the chief designer of the RX8 admitted that aftermarket turbo kits will likely be available to give the RX8 a boost in power.

The Mazdaspeed RX8 is expected to have a 300hp roatary non-turbo engine in it, just a displcement incease to the existing two rotors.

I think Mazda wants to cut its teeth with the Renesis first, then dial up the power.

Cheers,
Sameer
