Steve,
Thanks for your advise, but I think your are confusing two types of "rubbers"
Vaseline may debilitate Latex which is the material made on your box of "rubbers" and that is true for any knid of latex material, gloves, etc, and specially in condoms which are VERY thin.
The "rubber" used at the door seals as well as in other parts of the engine are made of a different compound, which is not latex, that won't get damaged by "petroleum based" lubricants.
If you look inside your engine compartment, you will find many rubber seals, hoses and other components made of "rubber" that are contastly exposed to Engine oil, which, unless you use synthetic, are petroleum based. (Maybe that explains all the broken turbo hoses we are having) ;-)
Vaseline is used on many rubber components of watercrafts and boats because of resistance to water, great lubricating value and because it doesn't get abosrbed by the rubber as easily as Silicone or other finer made lubricants, which in turn, can "cook" the rubber at higher temperatures.
Also, do you know what Silicone is made from?
Although your Latex is popularly known as "rubber" is not made of such.
I hope this helps! :-)
Sergio.
98.5 1.8TMS / Pearl / with well lubricated door seals
