Default Really low gas mileage 17MPG in the city>>>

I have a 00 1.8TQM with 1100 miles on it. Just passed the break in period and am still getting lousy gas mileage. I use 93 oct gas and drive mainly in the city where the EPA rates the car to be 22 mpg. How come my gas mileage is so bad. Anyone have the same issues/fixes?
Thanks

Default Where are you located?? cold temps?

I have a 99 Passat 1.8t and ever since the weather has turned colder my MPG has gone down. I have gone from 23-26 MPG in the city to 18-20 MPG. I have talked with others at vwvortex.com and they to have seen the same thing.

WHY? I HAVE NO CLUE!!

Default My mileage has dropped in the last few months....

I think it is due to the MTBE additive that is put in the gas in California, and other states. For awhile, they were selling gas without it due to shortages, now it is back, and mileage is dropping. The stuff is horrible, and is being phased out, but I guess we are stuck with it for now.

Default Same problem in Boston.

I commute only 7-8 miles, so my engine just gets warm as I start reaching work. (or home in the other direction). Thus, I'm not doing very much to let my engine get to an efficient gas usage state.

Default Give it some more time...

...my mileage kept improving well past 1000 miles. I saw my first 29mpg (highway) tank at about the 3000 mile mark. That said, I'm only getting about 20mpg in around-town driving here in Boston. I'd like the claimed 22, but I've never been one to be easy on the throttle :-)

Could be your oil is 20-50wt - It makes a big difference in those temps.

Default I am in St. Louis and it is about 24 outside! Is cold weather responsible??

This is very interesting I wonder if it really is the cold temps. that is responsible. One thing that I heard has to do with the gas in the winter and how it is different. Who know I never heard that before, but I have no idea.

Default We go to 10% MTBE every winter...

and the mileage on every car I have driven since they started doing it (many years now) falls the same 10%.

Default I think it depends greatly on how you drive (more)

I have a 2.8 QMS but I have found the gas milage varies greatly depending on just how agressive I drive. The more fun I have, the more fuel I burn. But, I have never gotten worse than 21.5 in mostly city driving. My usual route is a combination of city/highway and I average between 23.5 to 24.5. Your 17mpg sounds very low IMO.
