Default rear brake tool question: anyone use the Powerbuilt tool from Kragen?...

see link. it's not VAG specific and has a few different patterns to match various caliper pistons. couldn't find a free 'rental' locally of the VAG-specific tool as some others here have mentiuoned.

brake tool

Default Shop around...

you can usually find a universal tool with a screw drive mechanism that will push and turn the piston at the same time. This one will work, but you'll find yourself alternating between this and a C clamp to do the job.

I bought mine on sale for $20 from Harbor Freight (+$10 shipping). Do a search on Audiworld, and you'll find a trick on how to enter the part number to come up with the sale price when you search for it on their website.

If you buy the "cube" you have to dremel a couple of the pins to make it work

Default for the 5 sided cube that has a blank side. the newer ones filled in that blank with the VW/Audi

application.

Default Harbor Freight sells a similar kit for $39.

There used to be a trick to ordering it online to get it for $20, but that no longer works. The tradeoff is that they have a store in Norristown, so you wouldn't have to pay $10 in shipping.

http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/retail_stores.taf?f=detail&Retail_Store_ID=176 </a

Default damn, wish I wouldn't known that 2 weeks ago.

I ended up buying the block tool to do my bro-inlaw's rear brakes. I just couldn't pull the trigger fast enough for that kit.

I was going to borrow Rob's, but there hasn't been a MG in a month. And, I didn't know you had one.

That block sucks, btw.

Default You did know I had one...

because you asked me if you could borrow it sometime to do your bro-in-laws brakes.

Then (apparently) you forgot. :-P
