rear brake work...do i need that "special" tool or what, i am

replacing the rear rotor and brake pads. if i need it then looks like the shop is doing the work. any experience wiil help. tech looks straightforward, but the closing "new information" has me concerned. thanks in advance.

so you could try it and see. If not you could then go buy the tool or put the old pads in and pay someone else to. Thats the worst case

I swear it was crazy how easy it worked. The pivot base on it fits perfectly in the indent in the rear piston. just turn the clamp and it turns and pushes just like any other brake tool

If you've got another pair of helping hands, a big C clamp type tool, and a pair of heavy duty needle nose pliers, you'll be fine. You just need to compress the piston while turning. You can do it by yourself using just the needle nose pliers, but it's hard and will take some patience. If you've got another person, have them apply pressure with the c-clamp (it doesn't take much) and then you twist with the pliers.
Like suckerpunch said, the worst that happens is that you end up putting in the old pads again. (Unless of course you turn the piston the wrong way and then even the old ones don't fit, heheh.)
