stops rattling, and of course all the way down it stops. It sounds like something tapping on the glass.
Any ideas are greatly appreciated, dealer didn't find anything wrong (go figure)

Have the same problem.
Dealer looked at it - took it out for a test drive and apparently the creaks and rattle I hear is either too low for them to hear it or the roads they are driving on isn't rough enough to make the noise.
I noticed that if I push on the top of the door frame from the inside there's a bit of play. Went to another A4 and did the same - door was solid. I think the doorframe shifts every so slightly when you go over a bump and the shift in the door rubs against the plastic seals which makes the noises you hear.
I'm guessing that when the window is all the way up, the door frame has more pressure against the seals because of the shape of the window, thus the noise. When it's cracked a bit, there isn't as much pressure and the noise isn't as loud or isn't there to begin with.
Checked the door panels and found one loose rubber clip which did help a *bit*. Other than that I gave up on this one long time ago ... just drive, turn up the music and enjoy the ride.
