Rear Passenger Door Skin Damage Estimates- Whoa!
I left my 97 A4 at EZ Way Parking near the Newark Airport for a 6 day trip back to Southern California during the Firestorms last month.
I got back ~ 1AM and prior to leaving the car, I noticed that someone had taken a swipe at my rear passenger door. Scuffs and all the way down to the primer. I quickly went back into their office and report my find and surprisingly, the attendant came out to look and said, "Yeah, looks like someone hit it with a door". We went inside and she gave me the contact number of the person I needed to talk to report the damage claim.
I call the next day and I'm told that I just need to take a picture and email it to them to start the process. Normally, once approved, they take possession of the car (offered to do it during my next travel and park for free) and have the work done.
Pass. I asked for the name of the shop they show- Technaut of Elizabeth, NJ. I mentioned that my Bamboo Metallic paint (LY1Z) was only offered on 97 A4 and it's very hard to match since I've had 2 shops unsuccessfully do it prior. I'd rather have my own shop do it.
After taking the pics, no response for a week. I email and leave a vm again. I get emailed that the owner has not responded yet and that in the interim b/c the paint problem, I should go to my shop and fax them the estimate.
I went to C&D in South Hackensack as severals here have mentioned- $1600, 3 days, and 6 week waitlist. WHOA! They definitely do top-notch work as evidence of the cars they were working on, but that's a bit much.
I went back to ROJO in Brooklyn today and Jim Jr gave me an estimate $402, 4 days, and not a super long wait-time.
I had to go back to ROJO b/c I know if I submitted the est from C&D only, they would deny it right off the bat. Their estimate did seem a bit excessive.
Now, it's time to sit back and see what happens now.

Yep. they are probably planning on painting a very large area.

Gotta see both estimates to understand the differences. I think you're looking at apples and orange
I've dealt with Matt twice and referred many people. I've seen work out of Rojo's shop as well. I'm sure there is a reasonable explanation for the discrepency. Clear that up, decide whether that discrepency is important to you, then compare the estimates apples to apples.
Given a reasonable difference, I would send the car to C&D if you want the paintwork matched perfectly. Jimmy has the ability to match it perfectly...but whether he does or doesn't is questionable. I've seen good work and bad work come out of his shop and I have no idea why there is such an inconsistency.

differences
I agree Matt's shop seems more meticulous. His estimates are extremely detailed, but there are some charges that i've never seen before- disabling airbag? lines for detailing, etc.
True, if my own insurance company was paying for it, I would have no issues with going with C&D. But since I'm already going to be fighting with a 3rd party that wants to use their "own" shop, I'd be more than pleased w/ Jimmy's work. He did the entire other side of my car that got side-swiped from front to bank by the NYC Street Sweepers. It came out very good. (9/10).
Thanks for the opinions and experiences.

it's that pretty small area in the middle of the door (another door hit it to the primer)

no dent- just scrape thru to the primer
