I have the part in hand and a local mechanic (shade tree type) I have worked with for years and trust implicitly. Just got the car and my local dealer is first cousin to a vampire bat! If I can have my trusty (and cheap) mechanic fix it, I would be soooo happy.
Anyone know of anything that might prevent him from doing the job?
Also, anyone have a go-by for this job?
Also, I wish I knew of another pronoun to use other than "anyone" - suggestions?

It needs to have the hub pressed out of it, and it needs to be pressed out of it's housing. If your mech has the proper presses go for it. Just be careful, it's really easy to mess up the bearing by pressing it in crooked.
My local Euro specialist uses a Hub Shark, and it takes an hour or so. Taking the upright off the car introduces alignment issues, and takes a lot longer, which is why I pay the $50 or so an hour and have them do it. As much of a die hard DIYer I am, I still pay to have certain things done that having the $500 tool simply makes easier.

I had 2 done under Audi assurance and i looked at the figure if it wasn't covered. I am almost positive it was 255.

There are no special tools required, that your mechanic wouldn't have. It does require a rather large hex-head drive to loosen the hub. That was the only part that was a pain on mine. I pressed it in using a simple hydraulic-jack press. Kris is correct in that it is very tricky to press in straight. It took me a few tries being very careful. Good luck.

I would recommend freezing the bearing prior to installation. While it doesn't shrink much it does enought that it goes in straight easier and use some assembly lube. They are some tight little bastages.
