rear wheel bearing going bad....

DIY rear wheel bearing....
You'll need either a hub type tool or remove the hub in total and have the local autozone(or what ever local car shop) do it for you. If you have a press you can do it. If you remove the hub, I would suggest getting an alignment after. I have a hub tool and a press. Here are some of the problems I ran into, axle flange on diff side was stuck(rusted together), suspension bolts stuck, new bearing mildly hesitent upon installation. Don't let this stuff discourage you , it do-able. Its good to do one, because you know, you'll be replacing the rest in the near future. I found a Kukko puller was handy in removing the outter bearing half off the flange.

not worth the effort to diy.
this is one of the very few things I would not bother doing myself. removing the bearing and getting it back together CAN be a major pain. I would just take it to a shop with the right tools/ press and let them deal with it on the car. 100bucks well spent imo

Uhh
Yeah, but one can jack the back of one's car and take off the hubs and bring them with new bearings to have them done somewhere. Just as easy and a helluva lot cheaper IMHO.

i dont think its any faster to do it on the car vs off the car
so I doubt its much cheaper. yeah you could take the hup to a machine shop that will do it for pro 20 bucks or something but is it really worth the effort to remove the hub? Dont get me rong ma, i am all about diy and saving money but for most people I think wheel bearings are the type of job people will be better off paying to have done. I helped ( mostly watched) someone do my rear drver side bearig iand it was a job from HELL. we broke a breakerbar and several sockets trying to remove the axle bolt so its not a job for the faint of heart. perhaps its all the track time my car has done I dont know but those beariing are the worst!

agreed, it's a **** job to do with one person. I did it in two days, took one off 1st day and 2nd
on the other day. mechanic was a friend of the family and he wouldn't let me pay him to press the bearings so all i had to do was buy the bearings. probably took me 2 hrs to figure out how to get the hub off, although it'd be easier i see to just bring the car in and drop the two rear wheels off and do it.
