Recommend a handheld GPS or other to track speed, location?

Anyone had any experience with a on-board GPS to track speed, distance? Recommendations? (I don't have a nice trip computer in my cluster.)

I have a Garmin E-trax Legend.

Good price, lots of features and great maps. And you can wedge it between the windshield and the dash.

I got the e-trex vista

it has a lot of memory to download maps/routes to.
