Default Recommended Bike Rack?

I will be looking for a bike rack for an Avant some time soon and was wondering if anyone feels really strongly about something they have themselves. I'm not sure if I should get a roof rack that hooks to the rails or have a hitch added and get a rack that fits into that. Any suggestions?

Default yakima on the roof....

I have been using yak racks for about 6 years, love them. Sturdy (I hit a low overhang with 2 bikes on the roof once at about 20 mph...bent some stuff, but held up surprisingly well)

hitch ones are harder on your bikes (they get dirty, and they wobble. Not nearly as tight) not to mention you need to get a hitch.

Check out my web site for pics. I have the doublecross setup on the factory rails.

Audrey the Audi

I just put my bike in the trunk. It fits with the seat down!

Default I went the hitch route...

I've had roof-mounted racks before (Thule & Yakima), but didn't want to worry about scratching the roof of my A4 1.8T, having the girlfriend lift the bikes up to the roof, or the noise increase/MPG decrease of having a roof rack. So...I went with the 1 1/4" Da'lan hitch mount and a Thule model 985 hitch rack. The hitch is pretty small and, with a cap, you really have to look to notice it. I can carry two bikes on the A4 and, with a 1 1/4" to 2" adaptor, I can carry 4 bikes on my Jeep. As a bonus, you can also get a adaptor to carry skis on the rack.

Default Fork Mounts attached to back of rear seats.

I have ssen this done and have considered myself.

Buy the bare fork mounts from bike tight, performance, etc and screw them into the back of the rear seats. with the seats removed you can put 2 bikes in the cargo area easily.

I use a Yakima Personally and have had no problems with it except for the fairing causing HORRIBLE overpressure if I have only the rear windows down. hehe
