People keep talking about these red map lights in the A4's. I have a 2001, but don't know what they're talking about. Is this a modification? I can see these two tiny little lights above the rear view mirror, but they're not bright enough to read a map by....

It's just a little extra light that might help you see something. But not a map. I hold my hand up there just for grins, but I've never used it for a practical purpose.
The actual map lights are, of course, white and work well.

It's really just so you can see your own fingers when operating the radio, climate control, etc. at night. Does a good job of blending with the backlights so it doesn't look like a light is on at all.

not nearly bright enough to read by. At full up you can read reasonably well .. at least this is true in my 99.5.

I guess some people take red gelatin sheets (like cellophane) and turn the map lights red as well. It makes the front seats feel like an airplane cockpit. Red light is better for night vision.
