And it was very helpful - thanks Eric S. and Tom C.!
I'm not sure if it's just my car (2000), but there was no metal clip, referred to in the tech article (step 1), holding the sensor in - just that U-shaped clip. Thought I'd mention that so that future DIY's would not waste too much time like I did looking for it.
Also, the tech article did not mention that the sensor does not simply slide out of the plug. After removing the U-shaped clip (step 3), when I tried to unplug the sensor (step 2 - yeah, I know I did it backwards), the plug came out with the sensor attached. Reason: there's a plastic tab on the sensor you should take notice of (you can figure it out by looking at the new sensor you purchased). From the end of the plug, there's room to insert a small screwdriver and depress the clip holding the sensor's tab/sensor. The sensor will then be easy to pull out. I can't recall for sure, but that U-shaped clip might have been depressing the clip (but why would it?) and since I got steps 2 and 3 reversed, this might all be a moot point. But in any case, I thought this commentary might help others.
Also, when I restarted the engine, it ran rough for about 10 seconds, then felt fine. Car and temp gauge have been fine since.
