Default Removing 98 Concert Radio

OK. I need to remove the center console faceplate to get at the hazard flasher relay. Before I can get to the GD hazard relay, I have to get the radio out apparently. The faceplate will NOT come off without the radio coming out...or without snapping in two.

So I STFA and found that I need a key (or 2) to get the radio out.

Does anyone know the exact part number to order for these radio keys?

OR better yet, does anyone have a suggestion as to an alternative way of getting the radio out? Help, please and thanks.

Default I've used the long metal strips from hanging file folders.

There's nothing magic about the tools, they just make it a little easier. You may even want to just drive to the nearest car audio store. They'll probably just do it for you. It takes five seconds.

Genius. Will it reset my radio to slip it out?

Default that's not the only way to get to it.

I actually just replace mine minutes ago. Remove the "cigarette holder" cubby hole. Stick your hand in there as far as it will go. You can feel the back side of the hazard relay. It takes a little patience, but you should be able to rock the relay up and down until it pops out. It pulls out far enough so you can disconnect the wiring and pop the new one back in.

Default Ehhh...Not so much...

Jestnomen, I'm not sure what your center console config looks like, but I just pulled my cigarette lighter "cubby" out and there is a solid molded plastic panel inside at the top.

Even if there wasn't a plastic panel inside, how would I reach up past the climate controls and radio to get at the relay all the way at the top?

Is yours the same console configuration? Thanks for the suggestion, though.

Default yes i have the exact configuration

I could only reach the relay with one or two fingers at a time. Its a tight squeez. There is a partition that goes in between for about 4 inches but then it stops. you should be able to feel the wires on the back of the relay.

Default Ok, further assistance...

Here's what I found, tell me where I'm going wrong.

When I get the lighter/ashtray unit out, inside is a molded plastic cavity that perfectly fits the unit. It's part of the outer console housing.

At the very back, there are 3 one-inch (approx) vertical slots. I can feel wires wrapped in black foam back there, but I can't get a hand up anywhere.

Do I pull on the wires? Or should I actually be able to get my fingers on the relay?

Apologies for sounding like a dumb@ss here, but I'm grateful for the tips.

Default take a small flat head screwdriver...

and wrap it in a rag. Gently pry at the switch to get the cover off. With teh cover off you can then pull on the switch with a pair of pliers.

Then you don't have to mess with taking anything else apart. And you won't break anything as long as you're careful... promise
