Default Repainting car = bad resale value?? WTF?

okay a few posts down someone said getting your car re-painted hurts the resell valuve a ton.

Why? 1st off does the seller HAVE to tell the buyer it was re-painted?

I have a 99 white A4.... Thing I don't like is that Audi's "white" is an creamy yellowish white esp when its in dim lighting

so I can either repaint the outside
or have the car striped and repainted completly

whats the cost difference between the two?

also would it be better to sell Audi and buy new w/ color... or get re-painted?

it seems that even the strip down painting would be cheaper wouldn't it?

That "cream yellowish" color is the white PEARL. That's a much desired color. And rare.

Default When buying a new car, the car with original paint in good condition has a greatesr value than...

a freshly painted car for a few reasons:
1) new paint less than five years old can mean that there was something wrong with the original paint
2) One has no way of knowing if the body was prepared properly.
3) Cheap paint jobs can peel prematurely.
4) New paint is often covering up body work/damage.

I, myself, would rather have a discount on the buying price and have it painted myself to make sure that it is done properly.

Default WTF??? Let me try again...

Alright.. first off I repainted the last car I owned. The value went straight to ****!! It wasn't a bad paintjob either (didn't have the engine bay or trunk painted). Basically I got bent over...

Now, unless you want to shell out $8000 for a repaint, whoever is going to buy the car is going to know. Go look inside your engine bay... see how there is paint around and below the engine. Guess what... you have to remove the ENGINE to paint that, not cheap. If you don't paint that as soon as somebody opens up the hood they will know. Still don't believe me, go to an auto appraiser and ask.
Dan

Default Repaint almost always reduces resale value...

First, there are paint codes that will tell the knowing buyer that the car was a different color originally. And if asked and you don't tell, that's potentially fraud.

Bottom line, no matter how well done, a repaint is usually going to affect value. Even my '73 911 with a fabulous original color repaint from bare metal by an authorized Porsche paint shop is worth less than if the paint was original and in good shape.

well if it is pearl, it costs more to paint & strip( 3 layers to create pearlescent effect), but it is also a rare color which is desired by many audi owners, so keep it original, and buy a new one, unless you plan to keep it awhile, original paint is always better for resale if in good condition. as far as costs, it depends on what kind of quality you are looking for.

Default Would probably cost atleast $20K to paint it so that there are...

...no telltale signs of the original paint.. Even then, someone who knows anything about paint and bodywork would likely be able to tell. Not worth it, especially when you consider the resale value.
