Default Repainting front bumper, should I primer it after sanding or just paint it?

The bumper is off the car since I took it apart to change out my water pump and timing belt.... Water pump went at 150,000 miles so might as well do the second belt while I am in there. Just waiting for the parts to come in to finish the job.

I wanted to repaint my front bumper since it is all messed up from highway driving and some paint scrapped off from when I was parked in Boston... jerk took off!

I understand you need to sand the bumper, but is it necessary to primer it before the paint??

How much paint will I need and is a clear coat worth it on the bumper??

TIA

Default Yeah, always use primer, it will help the color coat adhere better...

and it gives you a way to fill shallow scratches..

If he's sanded it to plastic, he'll want something to cover the bare plastic..

Default i haven't touched it yet, should I skip sanding and just paint it instead?

I was unsure if new paint will stick to the existing paint... paint on bumper is original.

He will. There's not enough paint on the bumper to sand and not sand through the color and primer.

Default If you don't sand it, it will look worse than it does now. The most important part of body work...

is the prep. That includes filling/sanding/primering/sanding.

Where do you recommend buying the paint and primer? Paintscratch.com looked a bit pricey...

Default Not everything.. But if you have a chip all the way to plastic/metal...

you can't just slap some filler in there, smooth it off and call it good.. You should feather it out so it's smooth. So you end up with a bit of bare filler or plastic..

If you're just scuffing and respraying, no, you do not need primer. If you're fixing damage, you should use primer, at the very least as a guide coat.

Default yikes!! not only would I primer the bumper (which you will need to do anyway)....

I would seal it after you are done with the primer stage. I usually lay 3 coats of primer (out of a gun, you may need more if using a rattle can), then I use a guide coat to wet sand, then I seal it. Sealing helps hide the scratches when the reducer evaporates out of the paint. You can paint almost immediately after sealing.
