Default Replace Your Own Brakes

I just did my front pads and rotors. With a brake tool, it is the easiest way I can think of to save about $700 in Audi-shop labor. Really. Even if you are not that mechanically inclined, you should give this one a try. The instructions in the Tech section are great. Taking the wheel off is about the hardest part. Aside from that, it is just two hex bolts to change the pads (you also need that $40 brake tool), and two 17mm bolts to change the rotor. You can do it!

Default What brake tool?

Are you talking about the piston tool?
I am going to do the A8 upgrade in the next month or so. So just wondering.

You only need the brake tool for rear brakes.

Default This brake tool.

Like the other poster said only needed for the rear brakes. There are other alternatives but this is the best. Many auto parts stores will rent you this tool.

here

Default Thanks...

That's what I thought. I just thought he had another tool to make the job even easier. Thanks for the link for the tool though, because I might do the rear brakes too.

Default Re: This brake tool.

If you have a C-clamp in your tool box, that will do the trick. Just be sure not to **** the piston.

Default I disagree

A C-clamp *might* work under the most ideal conditions. You *might* also break something else in your effort to save a few bucks.

It's not worth it. You are already saving hundreds of dollars by doing the job yourself. Get this tool and make the job easy and painless. I rented one for $8/day at a local tool rental place.

You'll need this tool for about 30 seconds on each rear brake, but without it you will struggle with a C-clamp for much, much, longer.
