My 4000 was rear-end this weekend and totaled. Would an A4 quattro be as reliable
as my former car? Any years better than others? I was thinking about A4 1.8t quattro
used maybe new? Any feedback would be helpfull.

I learned to drive on my Dad's 84 4000s quattro. Really great car. So fun to drive. But the build quality and the reliability just doesn't compare to what Audi is putting out today. We had electrical problems (finicky window switches) from the start. And then the car ate through a few batteries and rarely started on its own. My Dad finally gave up on the thing this past fall after chasing various gremlins for the past 5 years. She served us well, but it was time to put her down.

I currently drive a 99.5 A4 2.8QMS and the thing is solid. Like a tank. Every switch you touch has a solid quality feel. The doors thunk shut. Road noise is still there, but reduced from the 4000. The climate control coddles you as you blast down the road in complete bliss all the while confidently in control. Lovely. And the 1.8T has to be one of the most bulletproof turbo charged engines offered today. My girlfriend's Jetta Wolfsburg 1.8T is a blast to drive. Love that engine.

I assume since you posted on the B5 forum that you are looking at a '96-'01 A4. As far as I am concerned it is a much improved version of the car you currently have. Enjoy.

The jury's still out for me on the B6.
