Default Replacing timing belt....

for my 60,000 mile service. I heard there is a new and old version of the tensioner, and was curious if they are interchangeable. Which should I get? Anything else I should replace while I have the belt off?

Default Here is my understanding.....

....sorry I didn't expand on this in my email to the 1point8T mailing list.

My understanding is that sometime in '99 or '00, Audi started placing a different timing-belt or timing-belt tensioner on the 1.8T engines. From what I've been told, this will work on the older engines also. So I believe we should be upgrading to the redesigned parts.

Default Waterpump doesn't need to be replaced on a 1.8T engine....

....when the timing belt is done. That makes sense on the 2.8 V6 as the pump is right there so you might as well replace it while you're in there as a bit of preventative maintenance. On the 1.8T, the waterpump can be replaced later without going through the extensive labor process.

Default More than preventative maintenance, the water pump and idler are usually responsible..

for timing belt failures as they are prone to siezing. The t-belt is called upon to turn the water pump on the 2.8, so it is a good idea to keep things happy in that area.

Default Thanks for the info....

....I knew there was a good reason, just didn't know all the details. Yes, my knowledge of the 2.8 V6 is kind of sketchy compared to the 1.8T. :-)

Default That's great info everybody! Can we have a write-up/pics/faq on these procedures? . . . .

Bentley manual only says, "remove the front end".

BTW, I know a John Baas but you're probably not him.
