Default Replacing valve cover gasket, timing belt

How much should it cost me to have a valve cover gasket replaced? What about the timing belt (I'm coming up to the point where I need it)? The dealer was telling me somewhere between 600 and 700 dollars, I believe. Does that seem high?

Default Valve cover is a 1 hour job max. timing belt is 6 + hours., with a lot of parts.

6 to 7 hundred is not bad for timing belt, on a 2.8, Assuming that the waterpump, rollers, thermostat etc are also being changed.

valve cover gasket is not a hard job at all.

It's not really to hold it. It's more of an alignment checker. Liquid paper will do

Default Actually, it does hold the cams, it prevents them from turning while you have the belt off...

further, if you follow the full procedure, where you loosen the cam srpockets, you will need the tool for when you re-torque the cam sprocket bolt.

Default I thought it would, but since I had to take the thing out to replace the water pump as it was in the

way, the cams do not move - not like on stock 4 cylinder twin cam cars (separate exhaust, intake sprocket) were they would twist towards each other .

So, before I took the homemade tool out, I just used liquid paper to draw timing marks on the old belt, a belt cover bolted on the engine, and all the sprockets.

And no they don't move at all, but if they did, it can be easily rotated by hand.

I don't loosen the cam sprockets when replacing the belt. I've read the bentley about that, but when I took a look, I figured I didn't need too, and I was right.

I have pictures but they are at home though

Default Well, if you use the tool, you will find that the belt may not line up exactly if you don't loosen..

the cam sprockets. What the tool allows you to do is loosen the cam sprockets, put the belt on, and torque the bolts, while keeping the cams in perfect alignment. Of course you have to remove it to change the pump, and of course the cams don't move by themselves. But, it when you put the belt back on where you want the tool. Is it ok to do it without? Sure, but I didnt want to chance it.
