Default That's the part I didn't understand - why the cam sprockets need to be loosened..

once the belt is removed from the tensioner, it can be slowly removed from the rest of the gears, starting with the passenger side sprocket, then under the waterpump, then driver's side sprocket then driving crank shaft sprocket.

The liquid paper marks provide a reference point, and if the sprocket rotates slightly, it will be off a tooth or so anyway, it's pretty easy to tell. So far no problems.

I guess I like to cut down on time when I can. I don't think the Audi is unique is the hundreds of belts I've done. The only thing they don't provide is timing alignment marks other than using the special tool - or if I open the valve covers as there are some in there.

Default You can't use the sprockets for timing reference, as they are not keyed. They can go anywhere.....

on the end of the cams, which is why the end of the cam has that diamond thing on the ends. You loosen the cams, so they can turn and line up with the new belt exactly, if you dont, there is the possiblity that you could be off half a tooth or more.

Again, not saying your way is wrong, or bad.

Default Yeah, I am really not sure you need to loosen the sprockets, but I did anyway..

I figure why not, since I had the tool.

Default Gives me an idea though - if the sprockets do move a small amount relative to the cam...

that means it's a built in cam sprocket adjustment for fine tuning and performance - no need to buy those after market adjustable sprockets Hmmm future mod.

I'll need to fabricate a reference plate for use on a dyno tuning since on the 12V, those two cam bolts are relatively easy to get to.

Great idea! The only problem is you need a puller to get the gear off of the cam, but it's doable!

Default I looked at Bentley just now and it looks like my steering wheel puller. I'll find out later this

year, as I plan to swap my 7 year old (gulp) belt before I do any track events early next year.

I used a regular 2 arm puller, worked fine. They are really tight, make sure your puller is strong!
