rough idle and stalling, but running rich

twas driving the car through a parking lot today and midway through the turn, the car stops turning. the car died suddenly, so the power steering pump wasn't on and it felt like the car wouldn't turn.
the car's been idling really rough lately, and now when coming to a stop, the rpms drop down really low and then bounce back up to idle. sometimes it idles fine, and others it starts bouncing around.
sounds like a bad maf, yeah?
it's also running rich, though (more so than usual with the t28), and i thought a bad maf makes the car run lean? the car backfires every time between 1st and 2nd gear shifts now.

the line that runs from the front of the intake manifold to the BPV - often cracks about 1-2cm from the manifold, where it comes off the nipple.
Check the little shorty hose from the manifold to the FPR too - it likes to crack.
While you're in there take all those POS braided fabric OEM hoses and replace them with rubber ones from Pep Boys.
