so the timing is drawing ever closer to when i need to do something about my transmission funkiness.
my 3rd gear syncro is on its way out, and 2nd gear just started acting up more regularly about a month ago. the upside is that it's forced me to learn how to revmatch more carefully![Wink](https://www.audiworld.com/forums/images/smilies/wink.gif)
so to drop and repair would cost more in labor than it would overall to drop and swap in a 5-speed from a 2.8... sounds good so far, right?
well i got in touch with those fine gentlemen at dahlback racing (TJM in NH), and they have there a 6-speed RS2 tranny that can handle up to 1kNm of torque. and its a SIX speed. but it is, alone, almost 4 grand.
i'm planning on driving this car for approximately forever, and slowly but surely finding my way towards a long, broad curvve that finds its peak about 300 or so.
Is the super-sweet 6 speed worth it, or should i count myself lucky that i have the excuse to do the 2.8 swap?

want to look into a 00-02 S4 tranny and rear diff. I think those can be had for less that the RS2 tranny. I did the 2.8 swap and love it. Also think that you should do a clutch and maybe a flywheel while you're in there as well as a rear main seal and the price goes up more. If I had a ton of cash to blow I'd think about a RS2 one. Good luck.

Uhm, it's not really a mod, but sounds more like a rapidly approaching neccessary repair. His question is whether or not it makes sense to upgrade since he has to put a new tranny in whether he likes it or not.

i couldn't have (and apparently didn't) put it better myself. I'd love to have been able to plan otherwise, but the tranny issue is kind of more.... imperative.

would a 00-04 s4 tranny be likewise an "easy" install?
I'm definitely doing clutch/flywheel, although i have little need very light flywheel. I was considering eventually doing the rear diff too, but not yet, as it's kind of unnecassary at the moment, and i can do the rear later. luckily iirc there isn't one available for the front by pelo or quaiffe..

have the power for it at the moment. When you get up in the 400-500hp range your 2.8 tranny will eventually go out and then you can get the RS2 and it will be worth the trouble of the swap.

expensive when you start opening that stuff up. I'm not sure how "easy" the S4 swap is but a couple have done it. You might need driveshafts too, I'm not really sure. If you need to go over 175 MPH I'd look into a 6 speed, if not, sacracice the better gearing for a 2.8 and save a bunch of money for future mods.

i was pretty sure i didn't >need< a 6 speed that could handle 1000 newton meters of torque (out of a turbo inline 4???), but it's good to know that it doesnt make sense....
but it's so cool!
