Default runnin hot

i just bought a !996 audi a4 its acting weird. its running hot but the temp gauge isnt going abouve the half line. the oil light keeps coming on every 10 to 15 minutes and whe i acclerate some times after driving all day its jerky like its not getting enough gas or something. thats only at low rpms though the oil was just barely changed also. and it has 86,000 miles on it. plz let me know what u think it could be.

Default yikes....

you probably have more than one problem on your hands

I'm thinking it might be a thermostat, a coolant temp sender, time to replace the fuel filter, spark plugs... etc. Oil pressure sender might be malfunctioning...

my guess is that you've got a handfull of problems and would benefit from visiting a dealership for some diagnostic time or having an audi specialist investigate wtf is going on in your engine bay.

Default How do you know it's running hot?

What temp is the oil gauge showing? What oil viscosity grade are you using?

The coolant temp gauge has a dead range, so even if the coolant temp fluctuates somewhat (say 80 to 100 celsius), the needle will stay put right in the center.

The oil light could mean a number of things. It could be a loss of pressure (failing oil pump), or low oil level, or a faulty sensor.

Not sure what causes the jerkyness. Maybe someone else will have an idea.

because after driving it for like 15 minutes its hotter than a mother. and it smells funny kinda like something is burning i cant even touch to check how much oil is in it. and the oil temp gaugege sits about 160 i beleave 2 notches above the middle. also when im doin about 90 on the freeway smoke comes out of the exaust its the weirdest thing

Default ummm...

is there too much oil? I read taht it smokes when you step on the gas... what color smoke? If it's bluish, you're burning oil, which is bad... but if it does it when you're accelerating only, that could me it's too full and the oil is sloshing up and pushing past the rings. I've seen this happen a few times during autox's where people with too much oil make a sharp turn and it hits the crank, and up to the rings, and out the exhaust.

As for your engine running hot... check coolant (make sure you have some), then the other stuff quattrofrog and quattro pete had suggested. Also, check your vac hoses to see if they're cracked... that might also be a cause for surging.

Default on another note, has the timing belt been changed?

That should be at the top of your list if it hasn't...
