Default Saturday's River Road Run Pics (includes crash pics and several long rants)

Saturday was an interesting day to say the least. It was a day that was hotter than the shades of hell. I would say it probably hit near 100 that day. Here are a few pics from the parking lot meeting place and on the road.

Then about 30 minutes+ into the drive this is where things went wrong. I heard on the FRS radio something about a person flying off the road. I couldn't make out what was said, but it was something to the effect of someone seeing the person in front of them leave the road. As I travel further down the road I see one of the group members off to the side of the road inspecting his S4. I pull out of the group to see what happened and to check on the guy. Luckily he was not hurt at all, but his car sure was. He took out a turn sing pole. Here are a few pics of what I saw.

This was not a pretty sight at all. I had to help him find his license plate cover and a piece of his passenger side lower grill out in the field that he ended up in. As you can see he will need the hood, windsheild, grill and bumper replaced. As for the internals, we could not tell too much. The fan on the radiator and radiator will need to be replaced. We could tell what all needed to be worked on under the hood because the hood release would not pop out of the grill. It was wedged in there real good.

Now it is time for the RANT! Actually several.

RANT 1

First off, why was I the only person from the group to stop out of the 20+ cars that were there and on the run that day, to stop and help the guy out? This is UNEXCUSABLE!!!!!!!! I understand that the people that were in front of him did not know. MP3 Guy had no clue about it since he was in the lead car and this might have happened part of the way back into the pack. But I did hear people on the radio stating that someone flew off the road in front of them. Wouldn't you have thought that any decent person would stop to see if there were any injuries or see if the car has so much damage that it couldn't be driven anymore?!?!?! I know I was a bit of a ways back in the pack if he was already parked and checking the damage. Even the S4 driver was a little bewildered about the lack of people stopping to check on him. Again, I say UNEXCUSABLE!!!! I hope this reaches some of those that were guilty of this. Thanks to Jerseyboy for at least stopping by while the rest of the group continued. It was appreciated!

RANT 2

Here is something else I found very bewildering that I had to comment about. The road that we were on was pretty well travelled. A few cars came along every minute or two. We had a lot of people looking at the damaged car as they drove by. We even had people yelling at us for some reason. I guess further down the road someone in the group probably pissed this person off. I don't know I am only guessing. But I digress. Out of all the time we spent waiting for a tow truck, we had 4 police cars and even a park ranger pass us and look at us. Isn't the job of the police to stop by and check on you if they see someone pulled off on the side of the road with obvious damage to the car. We really didn't feel the cops needed to be flagged down since we were already waiting for the tow truck, but come on! They just looked at us and went on their merry way.

RANT 3

Now this one I do not know who to sent this one too. Maybe many parties. The S4 driver called Audi Road Side Assistance for a tow truck at around 3:45 PM on Saturday. He was told it would be an hour to one and a half hours before the tow truck showed up. I can understand it taking that long, so we just hung out, inspected the damage and he made some calls to his insurance company. 2 hours go by and still no tow truck. He calls Audi Road Side Assistance and they say another 40 minutes. 50 minutes go by and still no tow truck. Again a call was made. They said another 20 minutes. We wait another 30 minutes and still no one shows. This is getting ridiculous!!!! Finally even the S4 driver is getting really pissed. He decides, after running the car for a few minutes, there doesn't seem to be too mcuh wrong with the car. He says if they fail to show in another 20 minutes he will drive the car to the dealer (about 26 miles away). Well, the tow truck did not show in another 30 minutes so that was the last straw! I followed him down the road while he drove it to see if there were any problems Nothing really wrong that he could tell so he went on his way and I split off and went my way. I got an email saying he made it back safely to the dealer the next morning. What is wrong with these Tow truck people!! We weren't that far from Civilization, but 3.5 to 4 hours of waiting is just ridiculous!!!!!!

End of RANTS

Sorry for the rants, but I had to get that off my chest. Normally I don't bitch and complain, but I thought it needed to be done about Saturday.

Default OMG. That sucks!

Is that S4 the one driven by the guy with glasses who just moved up here from North Carolina?

Did he have a college-related virginia license plate?

Default Again unexcusable.....

For all of the meets I have been to everyone always seems to be very helpful and in most cases they try to go out of there way to help everyone. Its hard for me to comment on this incident since I was not along for the ride, but in all cases there is no reason why the group should not have stopped and came back to the crash site. This is one reason why the 2-Ways are so helpful on large groups like this. Again I can't blame anyone for this since I have no clue really what went wrong. But I hope for future rides that this kind situation never happens again for both the driver and the group.

Default Those jerks

It was dificult for me to get through my head that other car people, even Audi/VW people are not all looking for friends when they come to meets. Most of them want discounts on parts or help working on thier cars or finding parts. They don't give a crap about the other people they just want to show off thier cars. Unfortunately this gets worse the more high class the cars are and we drive pretty nice cars.
