I pulled the vac line off that runs between the intake and the turbo bypass valve (the one on the front of the intake manifold).
I stuck one end of a 2-ft section of vacuum line on the manifold nipple and intermittently dipped the other end into the SeaFoam can while the engine was running. It does cause the engine to stumble and creates a bit of smoke.
The instructions say to shut off the engine and let it sit for 5-minutes and restart. The car deiseled a bit when I turned off the ignition. I waited about 10 or 15 minutes (just enough time for a quick PBJ). Then started the car again. The car started quickly, but produced copious amounts of smoke for several minutes, much more than when I was adding the SeaFoam. I'm guessing that was the crud being burned off.
The cleaning did trigger a CEL, and I was unable to clear the CEL by disconnecting the battery. The CEL did go away after a few engine crank cycles.
I am very pleased with the results and plan to buy a can for my wife's gastank as preventative maintenence.

If large amounts of crap spill out of the head, I'm afraid it could clog a cat. And the O2 sensors are very sensitive as well. I'd hate to screw up 2-4 O2 sensors as a result of this.
How many miles were on your car when you performed this? Have you done a similar decarbonizing procedure before? Can you give us an update in 2-4 weeks if you encounter any issues? (please post the update in this thread so people can find the info in the archives)

Totally agree on both counts. Back in the day, we would pour Marvel mystery Oil down our carburators (a primitive device predating fuel injection, designed to produce a more-or-less combustible mixture of air/fuel) to get rid of carbon buildup. I trust my mechanic and I figure he knows a hell of a lot more than I do about engines. he said it was safe and the can says it's O2 sensor safe, so I fugure what-the-hell.
"How many miles were on your car when you performed this?"
66,000 on a 97. Yup, I live 5-minutes from work.
"Have you done a similar decarbonizing procedure before?"
First time on a fuel injected engine.

You bet!
