Default searched....if my temp sensor is bad will VAG be off also or will only gauge be wrong?

im trying to figure out if its my thermostat or temp sensor that is "broken". on the highway my gauge wont stay in the middle, but after driving and then sitting and idleing it will go to the middle, but if i start cold and let idle it takes a long time to go up. ive only noticed it now that its gotn cold out. this seems like a thrmostat to me. ill prob replace that first (less than 20$) and if that dosent work ill do the temp sensor (i think 7$) if neither works i guess ill be back.

Default Temp sensor = much easier (and cleaner) to replace than the t-stat.

For $10 it's easier to start there, trust me. It certainly won't hurt to replace it, especially if it's been a while.

It's the thermostat. The temp sender usually just causes erratic readings, or none at all.

Default heh. that being said, it's most likely the t-stat, given the circumstances you described.

But replacing the sensor, not a problem, and worth it while you're doing this little stuff. $20 in parts but a couple hours of work, blah!

Default Actually in my recent experience...

My coolant temp gauge was coming up to temperature more slowly than I thought it should be and only coming up to somewhere between 1/4 and 3/8ths of the way up the gauge, when in the past it would come up to within a line or two of halfway and stay there. BTW this happened gradually...nothing drastic. I replaced the temp sensor on Sat. and the temp gauge now (1) comes up more quickly and (2) comes up to within a bar or two of halfway as it should. Being as my vehicle is a '97 I wouldn't be at all suprised if its your coolant temp sensor

Default Right, but he said it is fine in town, drops on the highway,....

which is classic thermostat symptom.

Default oops, missed that part...

my mistake, although IIRC my gauge ran higher in town than on the highway to some extent as well.

Regardless, it's an easy fix to do the temp sensor and it's cheap, so why not?
