Sedan or Avant?

Ordering one next week and still can't deside which. I do occasionally fill a car up with whatever I need to haul. And often use a roof rack to carry mine and my girlfriends bikes. Would also need to carry all four of my summer or winter tires when having them swapped (17" summer and 16" winter). Is the sedan up to all this, or do I need the Avant? I do like the idea that the roof rails mean I won't scratch the paint installing the rack for the suumers.

....I have a Yakima rack on my sedan which I leave on all year long, so minimal worries about scratching the paint when installing it. If you do go with a sedan and a rack...get some of the 3M clearbra material from Griot's Garage to stick on the roof where the rack pads rest, this should help to minimize scratches in case you're not careful one time when you install it.
You can fit four wheels with tires in the sedan, I've done it. You do have to fold the rear seats down though.
With all that said, if I were ordering today, I'd go for an Avant. Should be much easier to throw a rack on and off with little to no fear of damage to the car. Also the hauling space is larger and you'll be able to fit larger objects in the rear (i.e., big TV box) that wouldn't fit in the sedan.

I put my bike in the trunk, not because I'm afraid of scratches but because it's a hand-made Italian job.
Next time I'll definitely get an Avant, has more room and I've decided that I really miss having a rear wiper.
99.5 1.8TQM -- no rear wiper

If you need a station wagon get the Avant. I went through the same decision. Settled it by taking each home and putting them through the loadind paces. The sedan is up to the task of gobbling up a lot of stuff. You can also get base racks from any number of suppliers, including Audi, for the sedan. You cant get that much more in an Avant. I bought the sedan and have hauled all I need with no problem. Its just a matter of personal style, after owning three Volvo station wagons there was no way I would buy anything resembling a wagon.

Go with the Avant. When I was buying my 99.5 1.8t, I didn't even consider the it. Now, I am regretting this, it's so much more useful, and sportswagons are very cool.

and i didn't get it for the utiltlity aspect (even though it's a side bonus). I bought the wagon becuase it's different and becuase you never see any nice euro sport wagons. Everyone, except for a few, thinks my wagon idea is crazy... but I guarantee you they'll think twice when they see it!
IMHO Audi makes the best looking wagons on the road... or should i say the best looking estates on the road!

We were just given the news of week 18 for our build date, hoping for a June delivery. We also picked the Avant not for the utility, but for the looks and rarity. Although, the utility is a bonus. I say give the wagon serious consideration, but you can't make a mistake with either body style. We love our sedan as well. Time crawls when you're waiting for your Audi to be built.
