Sounds good.
You'll save a chunk of money by selling before deploying. The money you'll spend on mods could easily be put towards the new car (which will hold value better than any mods you'll buy), you'll have a new car with a warranty, and over a year to save/pay down the loan before school starts.
The only downside...nobody has any respect for cars at school. If anything, people see a car they like, and see fit to vandalize it in some way...because they can't have it. Sucks...but I would have a hard time owning a car I liked while going to school. A friend of mine did when I was going to college...they always parked in front of the campus police. It was the only "safe" place to park. Even then, they had to put up with a bent antenna and a dented fender. :-/ And this is at a school where kids were driving mommy and daddy's Land Rovers.
