Serious Question. What is your opinion on Quattro VS FWD for the 98.5 1.8TM W/Sports Package...?

You need to decide based on these pros and cons
Quattro: better acceleration while on a curve, independent rear suspension, better bad weather performance.
FWD: lighter -> better straight line acceleration, abd better braking, better gas mileage, cheaper price.
Re: price: I know some people say you recover the price of Quattro during resale. But that is true only if you don't have too many miles on the car. They also forget the price you pay with lower gas mileage and interest.
In the end, go ahead and test drive the cars, and buy what you prefer.

You are forgetting the fun factor of Quattro in the snow.
I can not wait for the snow to start falling down.
Audi should have made A4 in two options RWD and AWD, then the balance of cars sold would have been much closer.
FWD A4 is a great car, but there are a lot of other cars that are just as good or even better for appx the same money. A4 Quattro simply can not be beaten for what it offers. Its all about the extra cost of Quattro and like you said, it will mostly recover itself during resale.
I look at it this way:
If you get snow - get quattro.

My understanding is that the FWD A4 (and A6?) don't have a fully independent rear suspension
Since it has a beam, I think it is technically not considered fully independent, just semi-independent. But it is a torsion beam, and more importantly, it has trailing arms with coils, which make it nearly independent.
Many here are quick to slam the FWD A4 rear suspension as if it was a solid beam axle piece of junk. They couldn't be farther from the truth.
