Default Serious sounding knock, top of engine (2.8 12v), no detectable rythm, adding oil did not help..

acceleration is smooth and normal, idle is a bit unsteady, but nothing alarming. It just started doing it today, and sounds pretty unhealthy.

Any ideas on what this could be? If you have ideas, how much will they cost to fix? Anyone want to buy an A4 with an engine knock?

Default Does this happen when the engine is cold, and go away as it warms up?

It could be the infamous knock that many 12v engines make when they are cold.. I have heard also that there is an oil pressure relief valve somewhere up top that can make a little noise with age, though I have never seen it in person..

Default Steady at all temps :( Just dropped it off at the stealership

The Head Tech there is actually pretty cool...seems to know his stuff and actually care. Other than him, I'll refrain from commenting on others, pending the result of this visit.

The Tech says it sounds related to the Timing belt. Could be tensioner, or the water pump, from what he says. They'll have to rip into it to narrow it down to the specific cause. So I guess it coulda been much, much worse.

I'll keep everyone posted....thanks for the feedback.

Default Getting tired of maintainence mods

The car has not been reliable, partially because I drive so many miles, but thats no excuse for some problems like today's.

i got the car thinking suspension mods, wheels, maybe some engine mods.....but every time I get some money to put toward it, repairs come up. So a year ago, I decided I'd just double up on payments and pay it off early. So now every time i can make a double payment, something breaks.

Its not what I want as-is, so I may as well sell it for a cheap car with a warranty, until I can afford what I want.

Just turning out to be not worth it.
