Default Which set of tools to buy . . .

I am starting out with no tools at all, and for the price, you can't beat the craftsman sets. I've narrowed my search down to two sets.

Craftsman 151 pc. Mechanics Tool Set --> 89 laser-marked sockets, 12 combo wrenches, 5 drive tools and 45 specialty tools. Has SAE, prob won't need them, and also has 12pt sockets, prob won't use.

Craftsman 140 pc. Mechanics Tool Set, Metric-->
This tool set features multiple driving capabilities. This set is designed for applications that require all metric tools and features a wide range of popular sockets, wrenches and screwdrivers.

I'm kinda leaning towards the 151 piece set because who knows when i'll need SAE around the house. IMO, i think this is a good set for me to start with, but i'd appreciate any insight. TIA

Default Get the 140 all metric kit.

I have NEVER needed an 'inch' wrench, where I coulnd't use a metric in it's place.

Default I like the 140 pc metric set.

The other set spreads the tool selection a little thin by dividing your collection among SAE and metric. Seems like the second set has a better selection of metric only tools. If you need anything SAE, it will probably be a simple socket set and perhaps some open-ended wrenches, both of which can be bought in individual sets from sears whenever they come on sale/clearance.

Default Go metric. I bought a combo kit and noticed that SAE stuff is used less than 5% of the time.

I actually had to go out and buy more metric tools. That kit seems to have most if not all of the useful sizes.

Default Another vote for metric. . .

Every fastener I've had to touch on all my (imported) vehicles - plus my wife's Jeep, my brother's Chevy, and my Mom's Geo - have been metric. Having the versatility provided by the range in the bigger all-metric kit will be something you'll appreciate even for simple jobs like brakes.

If you're really worried that you'll come up against an SAE fastener "around the house," just buy a small, cheap strip of SAE sockets and use them with the handles/drivers in your metric kit.

Default Get the metric ones...

if you think that you'll need SAE around the house you can get a cheap kit at Autozone or something.
Get the good ones for your car.
