Default Shift problem

I backed my 1996 A4 2.8 out of the garage the other day and found that a plastic bucket was trapped under the car. When I attempted to drive forward, the transmission did not respond. The car starts and idles nicely, and will shift between neutral and park It will not shift into any forward gear or reverse. When I try the transmission makes a light clicking noise. Transmission fluid and leakage have been checked regularly. There is no visible damage under the car. What's wrong? Can a dealer fix the problem with a scan tool?

Default Here's a long shot.......

Did you check the cable adjustment? Left side of the trans, see if the bracket moved from it's original spot by markings around the bolt heads. Try holding the shifter in different places, not just the spots it clicks into. Trans go into limp mode? Dtc may be able to tell you more, maybe the bucket clipped the multi-function switch? Unplugged it? (again, left side).

Thanks.Just went by the dealer, and the service manager said one of the techs had two cases in which the shift linkage had been screwed up backing over objects. I am ordering the fukll shop manual since I have only the Chilton version. Again, thanks.
