Default Shudda RTFM because I just burned up my cat:-(

Gotta flashing CEL and some ticking noise consistent with engine RPM. Low power as if running on three cylinders. VAG-COM detected a P0302 Cylinder #2 Misfire.

Swapped the CPs and spark plugs; code did not follow the swap. Checked the ICM and fuel injectors. ICM good; all fuel injectors failed (read 5 VDC instead of B+ - no blinking VAG 1527B either; WTF?) So checked the fuel pump relay, passed most but not all tests.

Considering this CEL is specific to one cylinder, I disregarded the fuel pump relay and the all fuel injectors as the culprit (figured the fuel pump relay was barking up the wrong tree anyway), but just assumed I had a stuck open #2 fuel injector. So I decided to try a can of BG-44K fuel injection system cleaner in the tank a few days to see if it frees the stuck injector. Maybe that's causing the ticking noise too.

Then I drove the car about 7 miles and the catalytic converter caught fire billowing smoke from everywhere inside and out of the car. The cat was 8.5 years old anyway. Car really runs bad now. Finally RTFM and learned that the blinking CEL means driving might damage the cat.

Guess I'll replace the cat and the #2 fuel injector, but I'm afraid the ticking noise might be some sort of compression leak like a valve seal or something. Any ideas?

Default I have a cat for sale. Almost new.

The sticker hasn't even burned off yet. $250 plus shipping.

I'd try swapping injectors and doing a compression test.

Good luck.

Seemed fined; focused on problem specific to one cylinder.

I'd sure hope so. It's from a 99.5 A4 1.8TQ Tip.

As Mica says, it's fitting in one now. ;-)

Default check the plug on #2 if you haven't already...

I was working on a car a while back with the same ticking noise and misfire codes. It sounded a lot like it was lifter noise, but ended up being a plug that had broken the ceramic piece somehow and was flopping around under compression.

Plug was mechanically OK but dark chocolate in color and dry. #3 plug was tan. Swapped 'em.
