is Simple Green safe for washing the engine? time for some detailing.

Yes, but...
I found that an engine cleaner (Gunk, or similar) dissolves grime a bit better than Simple Green. And on really soiled areas (around spark plugs, etc) I'd use some carb cleaner before hosing the engine down, but I'd keep car cleaner away from plastic parts.

Simple Green is supposedly bad for aluminum

About that Chinook...
According to that site, people used Simple Green on the airframe of the (30 year-old!) Chinook helicopters, and they were told that this can irreparably corrode the aluminium. I guess, the Simple green seeps into cracks and under rivets, etc. It wouldn't surprise me if it's not easy to wash all the Simple Green off in that case, and that may lead to corrosion.
But with a car engine, I doubt that 5 minutes soaking, followed by a thorough rinsing, would cause damage to aluminium parts (the head). Just look what road salt does to aluminum parts on cars! I wouldn't be worried about using Simple Green once a year, but as I said, I found engine degreasers to work a bit better anyway. They just cost more.
