Default Were you downshifting hard? The ELV change shouldn't have caused you to run that rich...

I don't think it was to dramatic. I used to drive from 400-6,000 and back down to 3,000 frequently. The engine managment should have adjusted for this accordingly. Temperature and humidity could have caused some odd effects on air density.

Older engines had problems because of what's listed below, but the engine managment of our cars should have self corrected leading me to think it was something else:

Reduced air density provides lower combustion temperature and pressure.

Fuel is metered according to air volume, consequently as density decreases the stoichiometry moves to rich, with a lower octane number requirement.

Manifold vacuum controlled spark advance, and reduced manifold vacuum results in less spark advance.

Default I just lost a part of a valve, POS, only 61k miles too.

Hey Director. What do you plan on doing? I have a similar situation. I lost a valve, well a piece of it. I had a piece break off, maybe 1/3 of the valve. Scarred the piston a bit and took a chunk out of the head in Cylinder 4. It's not nearly as bad as yours. I am quoted 5k for machined head, new exhaust valves, and timing belt job. Does that sound reasonable?

Default I had my head machined from a t-belt break by Clearwater Cylinder Heads....

they did it for like 800 with a new cam tensioner. They do a great job. I would recommend them for a rebuilt head but what are you planning on doing to the block. If you have cylinder wall damage you'll need your block worked on.
