Draw your own conclusion from this 30 page thread
but the last F1 car to use cast iron rotors was a Williams about 5 years ago during qualifying. The driver felt that he could modulate the brakes better with a cast iron rotor than with carbon. Any poorly designed and/or abused rotor can crack.
