couldnt do much harm, as ive had many suggest here.
I never had a CEL, but I just VAG the car to find some engine codes, camshaft timing retard.
Now this makes me more worried, I will probably make more effort now to finally change the CCT, however am I now going to have to correct the timing? How would I do so?

I had P0012 (I think) camshaft timing retarded. I had a CEL.
Tried replacing the cam position sensor - same issue.
Replaced the Cam Adjuster Unit (have to also replace the valve cover gasket and cam gaskets at the same time). Problem turned out to be a broken plastic guide rail / runner on the cam adjuster unit that the cam chain rides on.
You should look into this soon.

pretty easy, getting everything out of the way to get the valve covers off is the hardest part<ul><li><a href="http://www.ca-va.org/tech/camtensioner/index.html">click here</a></li></ul>

there should be 16 links between the marks. I doubt very much that you "skipped" a tooth. Your cct would have to be nearly un-existant for that to happen.

I had 16 links with the bad unit then 16 links after installing the new unit.
Best price on a new unit was $343 from 1stVWParts.
If your guide rail(s) have broken, be prepared to look for broken pieces and drop the oil pan to flush out any garbage that may have fallen, replace the oil pickup tube.
Either way, your front end likely has to come off as you will want to ensure proper timing in any event. If the cam adjuster is toast - then that is your problem. If the old adjuster is OK - I'd focus on ensuring your timing is spot on.
