Default So what does it take for a car to be considered "totalled?"

So here's the skinny on my car:

2001 1.8TQMS
110k miles

Got into an accident and got two repair estimates. Average repair cost is $4900.

Repair items:
Hood
Passengerside fender
Passengerside headlight
Bumper
Foglight
Passengerside HID bulb/ballast

Car still drive straight and as far as I can tell, it's mostly cosmetic damage. It didn't even touch my FMIC.

Looking up the car on kbb, edmunds, etc. says that my car is worth $10-11k.

Is the cost to repair enough for the damage appraiser to consider my car totalled?

I don't want to get rid of the car.

If it comes to that, what are my options?

Default take the pay out, buy back the car.. it will have a salvage title

tell the insurance company you'll do the work yourself and they just need to pay for the parts

Default ask your adjuster. typically, it's 80%, which you're only at 50. once the secondary supplement is

made, which is when they take apart the car and find more things to repair, then you'll know your answer.

I have a silver hood for sale with custom StonGard

Default I was just in that position. I dotn know what guidelines are for a "total". Check this out though.

This was a total. Like 6 months ago. Audi saved my life. Seriously.

Its kind of a big pic. Hopefully browser will re-size for you.

Default OH no!!!!

sorry man!! WTF happened!! are you OK?

generally it's heavy engine damage or ANY damage to the frame. if the frame is in any damaged, the integrity of the structure is compromised and it's 'totalled' right there.

doesn't sound like there's frame or engine damage. so yours sounds like it's borderline so it becomes - car's value vs repair bills. i believe different insurance outfits use different scales to make their decisions.

Default I'm fine.

It was heavy traffic and I was on my way to work when a durango cut off the guy ahead of me forced him to hit the brakes. WHAM! It was too late for me.

So far, the repair estimate is only for the visible damage. Have yet to assess to see if there is any additional damage under the bumper and fender.

I can't imagine it being too bad. I mean, the passengerside FMIC piping was untouched. However, the foglight was toast.

I just spoke w/ the adjuster and their criteria was 80% and they do provide other options to their members to retain the car w/o a salvage title.

But I guess I'll cross that bridge when I get to it.

Default Yeah, just confirmed that number w/ my adjuster.

I'll be getting a replacement hood in the process, but I appreciate the offer.

Default Prefer not to have a salvage title.

Granted, I won't be selling anytime soon, but I will eventually once the lil ones start popping out.

Just want to keep the car clean and clear.
